Sleeper routes are returning on real economics: your fare buys transport, lodging and a border crossed by breakfast.

The sleeper train survived a decade of obituaries and came back with a spreadsheet. Priced against a short-haul flight plus a night in a city-centre hotel, a berth on a returning night route is frequently the cheaper total — and it moves you while you sleep, which no hotel can.
What actually happened
Operators across Europe and Asia reopened night routes and ordered new rolling stock for the first time in a generation. The revival runs on three inputs: flight-shame-adjusted demand, city-centre-to-city-centre timing, and hotel prices that turned "transport plus bed" into a bargain rather than a compromise.
The arithmetic for the traveller
Price the whole night, not the ticket. A couchette that costs more than the budget flight usually costs less than the flight plus airport transfers plus the hotel night it replaces — and it deposits you in the centre at breakfast, a day effectively gained. Private cabins run higher and compete with good hotels; shared compartments compete with hostels and win on the geography alone.
The catch
Sleep quality is honest: you are on rails, there are junctions, and the 03:00 border stop on some routes is a documented institution. Book the direction that arrives on your first working morning, not departs after your last. Popular routes sell out weeks ahead in season, which is the surest sign the economics work.
For the place, not just the visitor
Night trains distribute arrivals through the day and through the map — secondary cities on the line get travellers the hub airports never sent them. Residents gain a mode that does not require a runway extension next door.
When not to go
Peak summer Fridays, when the romance shares a corridor with everyone else's. Midweek in the shoulder months the same berth is quieter, cheaper, and arrives into a city that has room for you.
